During 2015 the National Diploma in Human Resource Management received full accreditation from the South African Board For People Practices (SABPP). The SABPP uses the Accreditation procedure to ensure that all the activities within the Department's programme meets the highest quality standards. For accreditation to be awarded nine criteria are considered. Some of the following matters addressed were: programme coordination, student admission and retention, teaching strategies, assessment practices, academic development and work-related learning. Organisations in South Africa are having to compete more and more in the international arena. As pressures related to international competition intensify, South African companies will be obliged to make rapid organisational and cultural changes and these can only be effected through the agency of people. Unless these people are in the right places at the right time with the right knowledge and skills and the right attitudes, the necessary changes will not come about. The key to the desired result is therefore effective human resource management. Human resource practitionerscan play a major role in organisations by assisting in the following areas:

  • Recruitment of staff
  • Training and development
  • Retaining staff
  • Ensuring sound labour/work relations
  • Reward and compensation systems

The Nelson Mandela University offers two programmes in human resources management namely a National Diploma and B Tech Degree. Students can continue their studies at the Masters and Doctoral level. Our students are trained by staff who have a good mix of both educational qualifications and practical working experience. Students have access to modern computer laboratories and are trained to use current and relevant software packages. Our student services include excellent library facilities and a student assistant programme or peer support. Students obtaining human resource qualifications will be able to follow one of the following careers:

  • Generalist human resource officer/manager - responsible for duties related to general human resource functions
  • Training officer/manager - responsible for actitvities related specifically to the training and development of staff
  • Employee relations officer/manager - responsible for ensuring that a sound industrial relations climate exists in the organisation
